What Happens At Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Danielle Micich

As you begin the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By bringing the treatments to you, we can present how different shutters, blinds, and shades would look with your decor. You’ll see how simple it is to pick the best window treatment when you leave the sterile showroom.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how can bringing samples to your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Even though every in-home consultation is personalized, there are a few constants that you should experience.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Begin by making an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already can picture the perfect coverings for you window, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to bring you some options related to your preferred product. We will also show alternatives, so you can be sure that your room matches your ideal.

When we arrive, we’ll sit down and figure out what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also want to know how the room is used and what style you want to accomplish. And it’s alright if you don’t know exactly what you need, as we’ll show you multiple options.

That may require going through different window treatments and contrast each product against each other. Most people need to look at a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the best stain to coordinate with the walls. We’ll also show you all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once you make your pick, we’ll get percise measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows in each room—even if you only want to make a purchase for some of your windows. We get multiple measurements because most of our clients ask to be able to order future window treatments with just a phone call. Before we leave, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will perform professional in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never witness from any window treatment rep. It should go without saying, the quality of the consultation reflects the quality of the window treatments.

Primarily, your consultant should respect your home. They should come to your house when promised, ready to present, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your representative should always have product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

In regards to pricing, you should be given a full written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, jotted down on a blank page or the back of a business card. And never accept pricing information before they take any window measurements. You want to understand how much product and installation should cost. If the price ever seems sketchy or unreasonable, please ask for references and check the store’s online reviews.
