Exposing 4 Shutter Myths

Danielle Micich

We make a priority of talking to residents about shutters in Fort Lauderdale.

And though it may come as a surprise, when we speak with people in Ft. Lauderdale, we hear the same few shutter myths repeated. Let’s spend a few moments to set the record straight and expose some oft-repeated plantation shutter myths so you’re able to make the right choice for your space when it comes time for new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Simple to Install Yourself

Lots of home design projects are simple enough to do on your own in a single afternoon. Installing shutters might not be one of them, though.

Installing new shutters can be hard from the get-go, as the measurements of the lengths and angles of the windows need to be extremely precise to ensure a smooth and snug fit, as well as to make sure your windows are able to operate. Depending on what the shutters are made of, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, lifting big shutters and installing them straight can present a tough job. Unless every part of the process is done exactly right, you could end up with uneven shutters or draftiness from weather-stripping that doesn’t fit.

Myth: Shutters Make Houses Look Dim

Less-informed home designers might shy away from shutters, believing shutters tend to make a home look dark or dim. This myth most likely stems from being unfamiliar with interior shutters.

Think about this: sunlight will always enter into your home at an angle. What shutters do is give you the ability to alter that angle by tilting their louvers, giving you more control over amount of light that comes in. And keep in mind, shutters can still swing completely open to allow as much light as you could want.

Myth: Shutters Cost a Lot

It’s a fact that shutters won’t be as cheap as common blinds from a department store. But this myth has to do with how you think about shutters. If you’re thinking them simply as a plain decoration that isn’t expected to last more than a few years, then yes, shutters can be fairly expensive. But shutters are a permanent addition to your house, and offer several benefits: they’re energy efficient and can lower heating and AC bills, they can increase your house’s appraisal value, and shutters can last decades, unlike blinds–which will need replacements often over time.

Myth: Shutters Make a Home Look Old-Timey

Maybe the name “plantation shutters” resulted in the myth that shutters are an “old-timey” treatment, but it certainly isn’t true. While shutters were typical for older home styles stretching back decades, their straight, clean geometry and neutral shades allow them to fit in just as well with more fashionable, up-to-date designs. Interior shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
