Exposing 4 Shutter Myths

April 03, 2017

We make a priority of talking to residents about shutters in Fort Lauderdale.

And even if it may come as a surprise, when we speak with people across Ft. Lauderdale, we hear the same few shutter myths repeated. Let’s spend a few moments to set the record straight and expose some common myths about plantation shutters so you’re able to make the right choice for your space when shopping for new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Simple to Install Yourself

Many home improvement projects can easily be done on your own in a single afternoon. Installing shutters might not be one of them, though.

Installing new shutters can be hard from the get-go, as the measurements of the lengths and angles of the windows need to be very precise to ensure a smooth and snug fit, as well as to enable proper operation of your windows. Depending on what the shutters are made of, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, lifting big shutters and installing them straight can present a difficult job. If a single part of the process is done wrong, you could end up with misshapen shutters or draftiness from weather-stripping that doesn’t fit.

Myth: Shutters Make Your Home Look Dim

Less-informed home designers might opt out of shutters, believing shutters tend to make a home look dark or dim. This myth most likely comes from unfamiliarity with plantation shutters.

Think about this: sunlight will always enter into your home at an angle. Shutters give you the ability to alter that angle by tilting their louvers, offering you more control over amount of light that comes in. And keep in mind, shutters can still swing completely open to allow as much light as you could want.

Myth: Shutters Are Expensive

It’s a fact that shutters won’t be as cheap as common blinds from a department store. But this myth is all about how you think about shutters. If you’re thinking them as just a plain decoration that isn’t expected to last more than a few years, then yes, shutters can be a little expensive. But shutters are a permanent addition to your house, and offer several benefits: they’re energy efficient and can lower your monthly HVAC bills, they can increase your home value, and shutters can last decades, unlike blinds–which will need replacements repeatedly throughout the years.

Myth: Shutters Only Work In Older Homes

Maybe the name “plantation shutters” has something to do with the myth that shutters are an “old-timey” treatment, but it certainly isn’t true. While shutters were typical for older home styles stretching back decades, their straight, clean geometry and neutral shades let them fit in with more fashionable, modern designs just as seamlessly. Plantation shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
